MINING COMPANIES TAKE NOTE: PROJECTS WILL BE AUDITED

The General Comptroller of the State will audit the mining projects: Fruta del Norte, Mirador, Quimsacocha, Río Blanco, San Carlos-Panantza, Llurimagua and Cascabel.

This was stated on Tuesday by Yaku Pérez, president of the Ecuarunari, commenting on the results of the Popular Consultation and Referendum last Sunday and specifically on question 5 that referred to banning, without exception, metal mining in all its stages
According to the leader, this work will begin next Thursday 15th with the visit that will be made by the surrogate controller Pablo Celi to Quimsacocha between Cuenca and Girón, province of Azuay.
“It is committed to making the first personal visit to Quimsacocha to verify if the mining concession area is in water sources, if there are lagoons, if there are superficial groundwater, if there is consent from the community or if there is a giant resistance” , he added.
After learning that there was a majority of votes in favor of the Yes, the Ecuarunari and other social organizations such as Acción Ecológica, YASunidos and Cedhu (Ecumenical Commission of Human Rights), they proposed to the National Government the extinction of mining concessions that are on protected areas and populated centers, the reversal of 69,856 hectares delivered, ensure that the dialogue process is effective to stop metallic mining and render the open criminal proceedings and arrest warrants null and void.

The president of Ecuarunari, Yaku Pérez, discussing mining concessions in Ecuador

“We are convinced that in this revision of the mining concessions these projects will fall because it will be demonstrated that there were corrupt acts in the delivery of these environmental licenses, in the delivery or in the granting of mining titles and that they were not fulfilled or with the Constitution or with the law, “Pérez said.
