Forum on Impacts of Large Scale Mining in Perú

On Wednesday 27 of these , the multipurpose room Nangulví Ecotourism complex , located in the Intag was deluged by men and women from all corners of the Intag to hear Peruvian activist Marco Arana talk about his experiences with large-scale mining in the neighboring country . The event was called by Communities Councils of Garcia Moreno and Peñaherrera Communities Council .

Being a weekday event organizers , including DECOIN had planned for about 70 attendees. In total , however, about 150 people came to hear the presentation by the sociologist Arana, winner of  several human rights awards and chosen Environmental Hero by Time Magazine in 2009 .

The presentation, which included several photographs taken by Mr. Arana showing the devastating impacts to air , land, serious water pollution, and the horrific social, was blunt to demonstrate the true impacts of the extractive activity in a country plagued by mining. Mr. Arana was also able to expose the false argument that mining brings countries and regions out of poverty . With data of the Peruvian government and prestigious international organizations he demonstrated how some of the poorest provinces in Perú are precisely those with large-scale mining .

Another myth of mining – that the industry creates many jobs, also was shot down as he reported that in Peru , the country’s mining industry employs only 1.5 % of the economically active population, and that on average, it takes between one to two million dollars to create a single job .

The event featured a presentation of the Father Geovanny Paz one of the founders of DECOIN and Polibi Perez , President of the Council of Communities of Garcia Moreno , also served to revalidate the struggle of nearly two decades that the population has sustained rejecting what can be called Bad Living; a  model represented by  mining.

Another aspect that forum attendees were able to see with their own eyes is the way how the meetings , workshops and forums held by entities such as the Enami , and others interested in promoting mining conceal and distort information about the true nature of large-scale mining. The stunning photos showed the dead rivers , lakes and rivers dried up, and the death of livestock , besides causing tragic diseases to humans brought about by mining in Perú.

This forum contrasts wildly with the meetings organized by Enami officials , the National Mining Company in Intag , which are trying to carry out, with more failures than successes in some communities. To cite just one example of the rejection felt in Intag to the presence of Enami , the meeting scheduled for this last last August 19 with Intag’s truck drivers at the same site which hosted the forum on mining in Peru, was vetoed by the communities that manage the Nangulví Ecotourism Complex . Because of the rejection, Enami was forced to move to another location. Meanwhile, Enami is busy  creating the false perception that residents are massively attending and appreciating Enami’s ” socialization ” of the Junin project.
